FASHION DESIGN AND TEXTILES
The textile industries collaborate with a whole host of professionals. all experts within their own fields, from fashion to color and fibers. These experts play a pivotal role in the textile and fashion interrelationship: they guide the textile companies, designers and technologists, advising them about future ranges and predicting why or how their ranges will appeal to the consumer. Part of the mechanics of the relationship between fashion and textiles is rooted in trend and these influence the preliminary stages of fiber production (which generally operate two years ahead of a season) .
Trends in fibers and fabrics develop from information gathered from professionals in fashion, textile mills, and other industry experts.
From this primary level, color and fabric trend information is then disseminated throughout the fashion and textile industries. Then initial judgment and choices in textiles focus on color. At this early stage views and considered opinions are drawn from industry experts such as the International Color Authority (ICA) and the Color Association of the United States. The fiber and fabric industries also resolve issues of texture, production and construction, which are typically informed by demands within fashion. The textile industry is steered by fabrication requirements that the fashion designer stipulates.
The fashion designer's relationship with fabric can be intensely personal. This intensity is very apparent at haute couture level, more so than at any other level and is largely due to the fact that indulgence and personal expression can be afforded at this level. Designer can develop designs ideas by draping with a fashion fabric, the real material, rather than toiling with a fabric substitute like calico. In the late 1940s and early 1900s Jacques Fath) , Parisian couturier to royalty and movie stars, would create designs by moulding fabric directly onto a model, responding to the fabric as he worked rather than sketching first.
